CNC metal parts manufacturing starts before the machine is programmed. A useful part must match the drawing, fit the assembly, meet the tolerance target and be maintainable in the real production environment. For automation projects, fixture parts, brackets, plates, spacers, revision parts and custom machine components are evaluated with this mindset.
1. Drawing or sample review
The first step is reviewing the drawing, sample or existing part. Material, tolerance, surface expectation, mounting references, heat treatment, coating and revision risk are checked together. If the drawing does not show the functional surfaces clearly, the part may be manufactured correctly but still fail during assembly.
- Critical dimensions and datum surfaces are identified.
- Material and surface requirements are confirmed before quotation.
- Assembly function and measurement method are clarified.
2. Machining strategy
Operation sequence, clamping method, tool access and machining direction are planned before production. Thin walls, deep pockets, long holes, parallel surfaces and repeatability requirements affect setup decisions. The aim is to reduce rework and keep the part usable in fixture, automation or spare-part applications.
3. CNC setup and manufacturing
After the strategy is approved, the part is prepared for CNC machining. Stock allowance, tool selection, cutting conditions and reference checks are defined. For small batches and revision parts, setup speed is important; for repeated parts, repeatability and measurement discipline become more important than raw machining speed.
4. Measurement and fit check
Critical dimensions are checked against the drawing or the reference sample. For fixture and automation parts, fit is often more important than a single isolated dimension. Hole positions, mounting planes, sensor brackets, guide surfaces and assembly clearances are reviewed before delivery.
5. Delivery for automation projects
Parts may be delivered as standalone machined components or as part of a larger automation scope. When the part belongs to a robotic cell, fixture or custom machine, the manufacturing schedule is connected to assembly, electrical installation and commissioning timing.
6. What to prepare before requesting a quote
- Technical drawing, STEP file, sample or clear photographs.
- Material expectation and quantity.
- Critical tolerance and surface requirements.
- Assembly environment or fixture/machine connection points.
- Delivery urgency and revision status.
